Volunteers have always been at the heart of Children's. The volunteering tradition began at Children's in 1917 when University of Washington student volunteers brought enthusiasm and vigor to the wards.
Over the past nine decades, volunteers have guided our development, raised funds to keep the hospital's doors open, sewn clothing for the patients to wear, rocked babies, played therapeutic games with the children, and advocated on behalf of the hospital and the healthcare needs of children and their families in the Northwest.
In 2005, more than 1,300 individuals continued this legacy of service in more than 90 departments, contributing over 127,000 hours of service.
